As a student, I’ve realized how important it is to take intentional steps to care for my physical, mental, and emotional well-being. With the constant pressure of academics, navigating social relationships, and the uncertainty of the future, self-care has become essential. Prioritizing it helps me stay balanced, manage stress, and stay motivated through all the challenges that come with student life.

As I researched the science of self-care for this post, I found that self-care has been shown to alleviate psychological stress among college students, enhancing their adaptability and psychological resilience. A study by Tang (2023) found a positive correlation between high levels of self-care and improved psychological well-being in this population. Furthermore, a systematic review highlighted the importance of self-awareness and self-compassion as integral components of mental health self-care (Hughes & Waite, 2023). These elements enable students to develop specific strategies aimed at achieving emotional balance, thereby supporting their mental health and well-being.
I also discovered that self-care isn’t one-size-fits-all—it’s personal. What works for one person may not work for another. Some students find relaxation in journaling, while others prefer an energizing workout or quiet meditation. The key is to build a routine that aligns with your needs, lifestyle, and well-being. I took two years to figure out what works best for me. After exploring advice from health professionals, trying various techniques, and reflecting on what truly benefits both my mental and physical health, I’ve created a self-care routine that actually works for me.
The 7-day challenge, below, is designed as a starting point—a motivating push to help students experiment with different self-care practices and begin prioritizing themselves. You can try all seven or just one of the challenge activities, whatever feels right to you. Remember: self-care is not indulgent, it’s essential. 💖
