Albuquerque, NM – Robert F. Kennedy Charter School proudly announces the launch of a new mental health initiative. Kenny Thomas, retired NBA star, will be working with Neolth to roll out mental health programming in the school. This innovative new partnership is a reflection of the school’s commitment to improving mental health awareness and support among adolescents.
Kenny Thomas is celebrated for his outstanding basketball career in the NBA with teams such as the Houston Rockets, Philadelphia 76ers, and Sacramento Kings. As a Lobo at the University of New Mexico, he earned significant honors, including All-Western Athletic Conference honors three times, 2nd team All-America, two-time WAC Tournament MVP, and WAC Freshman of the Year. His commitment to excellence on the court is matched by his dedication as an entrepreneur to creating positive change in communities.
Since retiring from Basketball, Mr. Thomas has worked to support the health & wellness of New Mexico residents. In 2023, he joined health tech startup Neolth as an advisor. In this role, he’s supported the company with the launch of their evidence-based mental health app.
Co-developed in partnership with over 600 young people, the Neolth app provides self-guided tools and educational content about mental health, such as breathing exercises and videos co-created by doctors and teens. Each student is matched with content personalized for their unique needs. The app also includes a care escalation system that uses AI to connect students to 988 - New Mexico’s confidential lifeline for emotional, mental, or alcohol and drug use support.
The partnership will kick off with a free community mental health event on May 22, 2024 at RFK’s campus. Mr. Thomas & Dr. Katherine Grill, CEO of Neolth, will host a mental health discussion with community leaders & students. Adults & teens will have the chance to talk openly about mental health, including a discussion of their aspirations for the future of public health in New Mexico.
Supported enthusiastically by Robert F. Kennedy Charter School and its partners, this initiative marks a significant step towards changing perceptions and encouraging the use of behavioral health services, ultimately fostering a community where mental well-being is prioritized and sought after.
